A Beginner’s Guide to AI Image Generators

October 11, 2026 · AI Mind Rush

An AI image generator turns a written description into a picture. They are fast and cheap, and results range from stunning to strange. This guide covers what to expect and where to start.

How the main tools differ

  • Midjourney is known for polished, artistic images with a strong sense of style.
  • Ideogram is a good choice when the image needs readable words in it, such as posters and logos.
  • Adobe Firefly is built into Adobe’s apps and is aimed at commercial work.
  • Leonardo AI and Playground offer many styles and editing tools in one place.
  • Recraft focuses on graphic design: icons, illustrations and brand assets in a consistent style.
  • Krea generates as you type or sketch, which makes exploring ideas quick.
  • FLUX and Stability AI publish models you can also run on your own computer.

Writing a prompt that works

A reliable prompt has four parts, in this order:

  • Subject: what is in the picture.
  • Setting: where it is and what surrounds it.
  • Style: photograph, watercolour, 3D render, flat illustration.
  • Lighting and framing: soft morning light, close-up, wide shot.

“A red bicycle leaning on a stone wall in a French village, photograph, golden hour, shallow depth of field” will beat “cool bike picture” every time. Change one part at a time so you can see what each change does.

Common problems

  • Hands, small text and crowds still go wrong. Zoom in before you publish.
  • Faces of real people are restricted on most services.
  • Every run gives a different result. Save the ones you like when you see them.

Can you use the images commercially?

It depends on the service and the plan. Read the licence terms before using an image in an advert or on a product. Rules about copyright for AI images also differ between countries and are still changing.

Editing afterwards

Generated images often need a tidy-up. Tools in our photo editing category can remove backgrounds, sharpen and upscale. If you want to generate on your own PC instead of in the cloud, see our hardware guide.
