Zapier vs Make vs n8n: Which Automation Tool Fits You?

October 11, 2026 · AI Mind Rush

Automation tools watch for something to happen in one app and then do something in another. A new form entry becomes a spreadsheet row and a welcome email. A paid invoice becomes a message to your team. Three names come up most often.

Zapier: the easiest start

Zapier connects a very large number of apps and is the simplest to learn. You pick a trigger, pick an action, and it runs. It is the right first choice if you have never automated anything and your needs are a handful of simple connections.

Make: more control on a visual canvas

Make lays your automation out as a diagram. Branches, loops and data transformations are easier to see and build than in a simple list of steps. It suits people who have outgrown basic two-step automations and want to handle more complicated logic.

n8n: open source and self-hostable

n8n can run on your own computer or server as well as in its cloud. That gives you control over your data and removes per-task limits when you host it yourself. It takes more setup, and it rewards people who are comfortable with a little technical work. A small, low-power PC is enough to run it; see our gear page for the kind we mean.

A quick way to decide

  • New to this, few automations: Zapier.
  • Complicated flows with branching: Make.
  • You want to own it, or you run a lot of tasks: n8n.

Where AI agents fit

A newer group of tools lets you describe a job in plain language and have an AI carry out the steps. Lindy, Relevance AI, Gumloop and Manus work this way, and Bardeen automates tasks inside your browser. They are flexible, but they make mistakes that a fixed automation would not. Use them where a wrong step is cheap to fix.

Start with one boring task

Pick something you do every week that follows the same steps every time. Automate only that. Once it has run without problems for a fortnight, add the next one. Most abandoned automation projects tried to do everything at once.
