Which AI Chatbot Should You Use?

The big AI assistants are closer in ability than their marketing suggests. The best choice usually depends on where you already work and what you ask it to do.

Start with where you work

• If your day runs on Google Docs, Gmail and Drive, Gemini is built into them.
• If you use Word, Excel and Outlook, Microsoft Copilot lives inside those apps.
• If you want one assistant that works anywhere, ChatGPT and Claude are the general-purpose choices.

Other assistants

Grok is connected to X, and Meta AI is built into Meta’s apps. Le Chat comes from the European company Mistral, and DeepSeek from a Chinese lab. Poe is different: it gives you many models from different companies in one app, which is handy for comparing answers. Character.AI is for conversation with characters, not for work tasks.

Two specialists

• Perplexity answers questions by searching the web and showing its sources, so you can check where a claim came from.
• NotebookLM works only from documents you give it, which keeps answers tied to your own material.

How to compare them yourself

Do not rely on rankings. Take three real tasks from your week, such as summarising a long document, drafting a tricky email and explaining something you do not understand. Give the same three to two assistants and judge the answers. Fifteen minutes of this tells you more than any review.

What they all get wrong

• They state incorrect things confidently. Check names, numbers, dates and quotations.
• Their knowledge has a cut-off date unless they search the web.
• They agree too easily. Ask “what is wrong with this?” as well as “is this good?”.

Free or paid?

The free versions are enough to learn what an assistant is good for. Pay when you hit the usage limit regularly or need a feature that is only on the paid plan. One paid assistant is plenty for most people.
