AI voice tools have moved from robotic to convincing. They now cover three separate jobs: making speech from text, copying a specific voice, and repairing recordings.

Text to speech

Type a script and get a narration. ElevenLabs is widely used for natural-sounding voices in many languages. Murf AI offers a studio for building voice-overs with timing and emphasis controls, and WellSaid Labs is aimed at companies producing training and marketing audio. Speechify does the reverse of a writing tool: it reads documents and web pages aloud to you.

Voice cloning

Cloning builds a voice that sounds like a particular person from a sample of their speech. ElevenLabs and Resemble AI both offer it. It is useful for narrating in your own voice without recording every line, and for keeping one consistent voice across many videos.

Cleaning up recordings

Rules for cloning

• Only clone your own voice, or a voice you have written permission to use.
• Tell listeners when a voice is AI-generated if they would otherwise assume it is a real recording.
• Check the service’s terms. Most forbid impersonation, and some verify consent before they will clone.

Getting a better result

• Write for the ear. Short sentences and plain words sound more natural than long ones.
• Spell out anything the voice mispronounces. Numbers, abbreviations and brand names are the usual culprits.
• Listen to the whole thing before publishing. A single odd pause is easy to fix and obvious to an audience.
