AI Video Tools Explained: Generators, Avatars and Editors

October 10, 2026 · AI Mind Rush

AI video is not one thing. The tools fall into four groups that solve different problems, and knowing which group you need saves a lot of trial and error.

1. Generators: video from a prompt

These make footage that never existed, from a text description or a starting image. Runway, Pika, Luma Dream Machine, Kling AI, Sora, Google Flow and Hailuo AI all work this way. Clips are short, usually a few seconds, so they suit B-roll, intros, music visuals and concept work more than full videos. Expect to generate several takes to get one you like.

2. Avatar presenters

HeyGen, Synthesia and Colossyan turn a script into a video of a presenter speaking to camera. They are popular for training, onboarding and product explainers, and most can produce the same video in many languages. Hedra focuses on expressive talking characters.

3. Editors that understand your footage

If you already have recordings, an AI editor is the quickest win. Descript lets you edit video by editing its transcript. CapCut and VEED add automatic captions, background removal and templates in a browser or phone app.

4. Repurposing and script-to-video

OpusClip, Submagic and Captions cut long recordings into short vertical clips with animated subtitles. InVideo AI and Pictory go the other way, assembling a video from a script using stock footage and a voice-over.

Which group do you need?

  • You have nothing filmed and want eye-catching shots: a generator.
  • You need a person explaining something and do not want to be on camera: an avatar tool.
  • You have a recording that needs cleaning up: an editor.
  • You have long videos and want shorts: a repurposing tool.

Things to check before paying

  • Whether the plan allows commercial use and removes the watermark.
  • Export resolution. Some lower plans stop at 720p.
  • How credits work. Generators charge per clip, and retries add up.
